The factor of correct Cement for Civil Works on Underground Cable Installation Project

Ordinary Portland cement shall comply with BS 12 or and approved equivalent standard. The source from which ordinary Portland cement is obtained shall be to the Engineers approval.

Sulphate Resisting Portland Cement

Sulphate Resisting Portland Cement shall be in accordance with British Standard 4027, Sulphate Resisting Portland Cement, obtained from a source approved by the Engineer. The Contractor shall certify that the proposed cement is of the required quality regarding resistance to corrosion due to sulphates methods of testing this quality shall be included in the Tender. The use of alimonies cements will not be permitted.

Portland cement is the most common type of cement in general use around the world as a basic ingredient of concrete, mortar, stucco, and non-specialty grout. It was developed from other types of hydraulic lime in England in the mid 19th century, and usually originates from limestone.

Cement Delivery and Storage

All accepted cement shall be delivered in sound and properly sealed bags and shall be stored in dry weatherproof shade at least 300mm off the ground. Cement shall be delivered in quantities.

Sufficient to ensure continuity of the Works and to enable all the necessary tests to be carried out before it is used.

The Contractor shall ensure that each consignment is accompanied by a certificate from the manufacturer certifying that the cement in that consignment is in accordance with the physical requirements of the appropriate British Standard. Furthermore each certificate shall be furnished to the Engineer before any use is made of the cement in that particular consignment.

Storage shall be on brick mats so that the inclusion of foreign material is prevented. Surface drainage shall be kept away from the aggregateby suitable dykes or ditches.

Cement Tests after Delivery

Each consignment of cement may, after delivery on the site and at the discretion of the Engineer, be subjected to the whole of the tests and analyses required by the British Standard Specification.

The Contractor shall arrange for these tests to be carried out at his own expense.

Rejection Procedure of Cement at Site Works

The Engineer may reject any cement as a result of any tests thereof, notwithstanding the manufacturer’s certificate. He may also rejectcement which has deteriorated owing to inadequate protection or others cause, or in any case where the cement is not to his satisfaction.

The Contractor must remove all rejected cement from the Se without delay.
