What Is the Voltage Classification?

Nominal Voltage Classification in Transmission and Distribution System


To identify the voltage level effortlessly in a transmission and distribution system a significant voltage classification is essential. The voltage class is used not only to identify the level of system voltage, but the main importance is to classify the Apparatus voltage ranges for the operation and maintenance of an electrical energy transmission and distribution system.

According to the apparatus voltage range, the nominal voltage class in a system may be as below:

1.     EHV or Extra High Voltage: 

The voltage level above 132 kV or 132,000 Voltage is known as Extra High Voltage or in short EHV class. The equipment, conductors, and accessories that should be used must comply with the EHV Class known as EHV or Extra High Voltage Apparatus.

2.     HV or High Voltage

The voltage level above 33 kV (33,000 Voltage) a High Voltaged below or equal to 132 kV (132,000 Voltage) is known as High Voltage or in short HV class is (33kV < HV ≤ 132kV). The equipment, conductors, and accessories that should be used must comply with the HV Class known as HV or High Voltage Apparatus.

3.     MV or Medium Voltage:  

The voltage level above or equal to 1 kV (1,000 Voltage) and below or equal to 33 kV (33,000 Voltage) is known as Medium Voltage or in short MV class is (1kV ≤ MV ≤ 33kV). The equipment, conductors, and accessories that should be used must comply with MV Class known as MV or Medium Voltage Apparatus.
  

4.     LV or Low Voltage: 

The voltage level above or equal to 25V (25 Voltage) and below 1 kV (1,000 Voltage) is known as Low Voltage or in short LV class is 1kV (25V ≤ LV < 1kV). The equipment, conductors, and accessories that should be used must comply with LV Class known as LV or Low Voltage Apparatus.

5.     ELV or Extra Low Voltage: 

The voltage level below 25V or 25 Voltage is known as Extra Low Voltage or in short ELV class is (ELV < 25V). The equipment, conductors, and accessories that should be used must comply with ELV Class known as ELV or Extra Low Voltage Apparatus.
